"Haven" refers to a safe or peaceful place. "Bay" was added for its close proximity to Ogden Bay. The Great Blue "Herons" seemed like a unique and natural choice for the mascot. The Great Blue Heron is regularly encountered in Utah and is the most commonly sighted variety of the herons.
