second grade students

🌟 Big news from Haven Bay Elementary! We are so lucky to have the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge bringing the magic of the wetlands directly to our classrooms. 🦢🌾

Our mascot, the Great Blue Heron, would be so proud of our students! This year, the Refuge team has been making special "house calls" to Haven Bay with some incredible hands-on learning:

2nd Grade Bird Experts! In February, our 2nd graders dived into Bird Adaptations. They learned how unique features—like hollow bones for flight and specialized beaks for eating—help birds survive in different habitats. They even got to "dress like a bird" to see how raptors use talons for hunting and large eyes for depth perception! 🦅👀

5th Grade Wetland Explorers! Just today, our 5th graders explored the world of Wetlands and Macro invertebrates. They discovered that wetlands act as nature’s filtration system and studied "spineless" macro invertebrates—like snails and crustaceans—to see how they help measure water quality 💧🔍.

The Refuge launched the two new outreach programs designed specifically for elementary students this year. We love seeing our students connect with nature and learn how to protect the amazing ecosystems right in our backyard. Way to go, Haven Bay Herons and Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge! 💙🐦
